The artists were part of a pop-up group show Code Switch curated by Post-Museum held on 8-9 April 2023 at Kampong Bugis. The temporal nature of a market resonated with the way we’ve spent our lives moving across continents in nomadic capacity, ungrounded from the rootedness of home and place. By collecting fragments and vignettes from our surroundings we delve into our personal memories and mythos, in search of living, dwelling, and displacement. We navigate feelings associated with departure, loss, temporality, and holding space - for the multitude of place that exists as touchstones within our hearts and minds.
The artists continue their delving into their experiences of displacement, and their experience of spaces at the intersection of two or more modes of experiences, and different states of displacement. As some of the artists had since relocated overseas, the element of displacement is embodied in the lives of the artists. This proposal revisits the practices of the artists one year on, separated by an ocean of possibilities. Philosopher Henri Lefebvre highlighted the difference in physical spaces of what is thought, what is experienced, and what is seen. There lies an intersection between the 3 areas, grey areas of infinite possibilities of reading and experiences. The spaces around us define our behavior, and our perceptions define our experience of spaces. Personal deep dives into our own mythos and deep cuts into our own psyche, unearths our personal mythos of dwelling in the city, amidst an ever changing personal circumstances.
Thinking of their practices from a geographic separation from Singapore, this group show proposes a new way of observing and engaging with the places around us, from drawing, painting, new media, installation, to performative art. A multifaceted reading of architectural and urban spaces is created. Such transitionary periods in their lives mirror the time-space compressed nature of our contemporary lives, where large distances can be bridged with technology and capital, as well as lingering thoughts of lost futures as well as better opportunities. This is parallel to the experience of the city is constant states of change. Such a changing lifestyle alters our perception of space
