This was the last photograph taken of my old house before the block was locked up for eventual demolition in 2011. It was a house of mixed feelings, and dark times. The block and its whole neighbourhood had since been demolished and transcended into history.
This was the last photograph taken of my old house before I moved out in 2011. The block and its whole neighbourhood had since been demolished and transcended into history. This work looks at our recent mundane past as part of the micro-histories of the towns we live in, and the collective histories of generations of people who had grew up in HDB blocks.
These blocks were built in 1978 and represented the type of architecture many Singaporeans grew up in. Many of these had since been renovated, and their facades and architecture adapted for modern sensibilities and universal accessibility. Block 248 represented a block untouched by modern renovation right up to its demolition.
