When Eugene Haussmann rebuilt Paris in from the 1870s, what he created was a spectacle, of wide boulevards, uniform architecture and visual landmarks. From the starchitecture of Ordos to Potemkin villages, architecture spectacles adorn our cities. Whilst Singapore built a 'representation' of a Majapahit Empire candi for Singapore's Bicentennial, former mayor of Bandung Ridwan Kamil is obsessed about Singapore. When one copies the symbolisers from another city into our own, what existing symbolisers are we forgetting, or displacing. The Merlion itself was a consciously designed tourism icon and the Gedung Sate was a Dutch structure fit for a new colonial capital district. What does such symbolisms mean to the city, and to the people?
